Iron County has approximately 135 abandoned mine parcels. The Mine Inspector is an elected position and the position is mandated by the State of Michigan. His responsibility is to inspect Iron County’s abandoned mines and pits to comply with safety measures. He also inspects and repairs fencing as required to maintain public safety.
If you have any questions or concerns about abandoned mines, or pits, or your responsibility and liability as a landowner with an abandoned mine or pit on your property he is the person to talk with.
He also addresses concerns and complaints regarding land subsidence, especially in known mining areas. Fortunately, after investigations, these sites usually turn out to be old wells or septic systems that have subsided.
